An Anglican building used for religious worship created:

• (a) for the ease of inhabitants living some distance from the parish church or
• (b) to ease pressure on increasing numbers in the parish church.

Roman Catholic Church: a chapel in a remote part of a large parish, in which Mass is celebrated.

First known use of the term: 1538-40, in the meaning defined above.
