Elias Yardley

Elias was born on 30th August 1833 in Oldswinford, Worcestershire, England and died on 6th August 1902 in Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand.

His father was John Yardley (1797 – 1870) born in Oldswinford Worcestershire & died in Stourbridhe, Worcestershire, England. John Yardley was a farmer of 100 acres & an employer.

Elias's mother was Jane Brookes (1802 - 1866) born in Oldswinford, Worcestershire & died in Stourbridsge, Worcestershire, England.

John Yardley & Jane Brookes had 7 children:

  • Ambrose Yardley (1824 – 1885)
  • Elias Yardley (1827 – 1908)
  • Alfred Yardley (1832 – death unknown at present)
  • Elias Yardley (1833 – 1902) - THIS ELIAS
  • Samuel Joseph Yardley (1839 – 1913)
  • Jane Eliza Yardley (1839 – death unknown at present)
  • Philip Benjamin Yardley (1839 – 1897)

Elias Yardley was employed by his father on his father's farm. Today he would be called a young farmer.

Elias married Martha Eden Wyatt  (1825 - 1909) when he was 24 years of age on the 12th June 1858 at Warwick, Warwickshire, England.

Elias & Martha had three children, 3 children:

  • Walter Bartlett Yardley (1859 – 1938) born Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, England & died Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand
  • Emily May Yardley (1862 – 1862) born & died in Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, England
  • Ellen Yardley (1865 – 1923) born Martin Street, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand & died in Wellington, New Zealand

Elias & Martha set up home at 35 Regent St, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire before emigrating to New Zealand in 1863. Leamington Priors was then a small agricultural village which later morphed into Royal Leamington Spa.

Elias occupation is now shown to be Book Binder & Marth's occupation is recorded as Milliner.

Once they arrived in New Zealand Elias & Martha initially set up home at Martin St, Timaru, Canterbury (1865) where there second daughter (and third child) Ellen was born. However by 1869 they are shown to be living at Bank St, Timaru. And by 1870 they are shown to be living at Section 305, Timaru, Canterbury, a parcel of farm land adjacent to Timaru township.

Elias remained living at Section 305, Timaru, Canterbury until his death in 1902.

Walter Bartlett Yardley

Walter was born at Elias & Martha's home 35 Regent St, Leamington Priors, Warwickshire.

By 1890, when aged 31, he is shown on New Zealand Electoral Rolls as being a Book Binder (like his father).  I am still trying to sort out the records for Walter Bartlett Yardley, he seems to have been married twice, although at present his son Walter Phillip Yardley (1891 - 1964) appears to have had 2 mothers (a neat trick if it was true).

However, the records do show that Walter Bartlett Yardley initially lived at Timaru (no actual address given so perhaps on the Section 305 property of his father) where he was a Book Binder between 1890 - 1900. In 1906 his address is shown to be Wilson St, Timaru and he was now listed as a Carrier. And in 1911 his address was Victoria St, Timaru and he was still a Carrier. By 1928 he had moved to 15 Arthur St, Timaru and had become a Railway Porter. Eventually, by 1935 he had moved to his last home at 19 Craigie Ave, Timaru where he was a Caretaker.

Walter died at the 19 Craigie Ave premises in November 1938 at 78 years of age.
